Educational Background

Dr. Pierre Demers completed his medical degree at McGill University and then specialized in ophthalmology at the University of Montreal. Dr. Demers did his  post-doctoral fellowship training in cornea, cataract and laser refractive surgery at Tufts University in Boston, and in Paris at Hotel-Dieu Hospital (Université de Paris), and the Bichat Hospital.

Refractive Experience

Dr. Demers has performed refractive surgery and given conferences from Canada (Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, Toronto and Windsor), to the United States (Boston), to Europe (Paris, France and Moscow, and Siberia in Russia). Dr. Demers has diverse experience in microsurgery of the eye and has published and lectured internationally on laser, cataract, corneal surgery and corneal topography.

As a recognized Canadian expert on therapeutic uses of the excimer laser, Dr. Demers was one of the first surgeons to use a scanning-spot excimer laser for therapeutic applications on the cornea. Dr. Demers was a cornea specialist at the University of Montreal Hospital Centre (CHUM) where he performed cataract and cornea transplants. He subsequently left the CHUM to concentrate on cataract and refractive surgery.

Accomplishments and Awards

Doctor Demers teaches cataract surgery to ophthalmology residents at St-Mary’s Hospital in Montreal.  In 1999, he was named “Professor of the year” in the ophthalmology department at the University of Montreal. Between 1999 and 2005, Dr. Demers was also president of the Committee for the Evaluation of the Medical Act of the CHUM, formed to evaluate and analyze ophthalmic surgical procedures performed at the CHUM. In 2003, Dr. Demers presented research on photorefractive keratectomy in high myopia at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in San Francisco, California

In addition to his duties at LASIK MD, Dr. Demers is currently involved in research comparing corneal-based refractive surgery versus lens-based refractive surgery. He also lectures on premium intraocular lenses (Toric and Multifocal intraocular lenses).
