The Role of the Medical Team

Your surgeon (ophthalmologist) and your optometrist are trained health care professionals experienced in the pre-operative, operative and post-operative management of RLE, CAT and PRELEX. The Clinical Assistants (i.e. COMT, COT, COA) are extensively trained in the diagnosis and treatment of refractive eye problems, and/or ophthalmic medical assisting, and act under the supervision of the ophthalmologist.

Surgeon
Your ocular surgeon has a medical degree and is highly experienced in the medical and surgical management of refractive errors and eye diseases. In addition to four years of college, your surgeon has spent four years in medical school, followed by a medical or surgical internship. Your surgeon has also completed a three or four year residency ophthalmology and has undergone intraocular surgical certification for use of the phacoemulsification system.

Optometrist
Your optometrist has attended four years of optometry school and has attained a Doctor of Optometry degree, is highly trained in diagnosing and treating refractive errors by non-surgical means, and has experience in providing post-operative care for RLE, CAT and PRELEX. Your optometrist, who will communicate closely with your surgeon to ensure the best possible surgical results, may be able to assume responsibility for your care as early as the day following surgery.
